More Joy – From Natasha Bedingfield’s Song “Unwritten”

I am not on top of pop culture – I rely on my family to keep me up to date, so I only really noticed this song: Unwritten, by Natasha Bedingfield (2004), in November when it was played as part of the Feminine Power Mastery course I am taking. I loved the song as soon as I heard a part of it. So later that night, I found the link to the YouTube video here and have watched it many a time. The song is now on my phone and I turn to it for inspiration and energy these days. Just this week, I did a huge happy dance to it in my living room upon returning from a successful presentation at the Ontario Bar Association as part of their Mindful Lawyer Series. :)

I have shared this song with many friends who have also found it uplifting and inspiring -  a source of JOY. So, I wanted to share with you here too. Many of you loved when I shared Stompa some time ago in this blog post: Wise Words in "Stompa"

And listening to and dancing to this song is such an easy way to cultivate JOY and thus interrupt STRESS, as I wrote about in my last blog post: Finding Joy Despite XYZ Stresses.

Here are the lyrics for your enjoyment!

"Unwritten"

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten

Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten The rest is still unwritten The rest is still unwritten

Oh, yeah, yeah (end of lyrics)

Some of my favourite lines with my comments in brackets:

  • Feel the rain on your skin /No one else can feel it for you /Only you can let it in - (We have to do this for ourselves, give ourselves permission!)

  • Live your life with arms wide open – (I love the openness, the possibilities here!)

  • I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines / We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way - (this makes me think of the growth mindset and I love that concept!)
